Access to drinking water is a fundamental right, a human right. Unfortunately, very often, for one reason or another, Nunavimmiut have to make difficult choices: will I flush the toilet or do the dishes? Will I take my shower or do my washing?

Too often we are faced with doing our washing, bathing and doing the dishes and throwing our water outside, or even washing with a washcloth, using disposable plates and having a gigantic stack of dirty laundry that cannot shrink.

Water is a necessity for life, hygiene and comfort. Nunavimmiut, like all Canadians, have the right to quality water supply service.

The signatories of this petition make the following request to our local, regional, provincial and national governments:

1. An assessment of water needs with residents, public and private services, as well as an agreement on the number of liters of water that each inhabitant of Nunavik should be entitled to each day.

2. An in-depth evaluation of the system put in place, to understand each of the issues leading to poor access to water. (What are the reasons why Nunavimmiut do not have a certain number of liters of water per day to use. For example: maintenance of water and wastewater trucks, retention of personnel working for the system, blizzards, maintenance of pumps in homes and in the city, holidays and etc.)

3. Put an effective plan in place in order to offer a quality and equitable service to Nunavimmiut that respects the water needs commitments in point 1.

4. Follow up on the plan over time to verify its effectiveness and ensure that commitments are being kept.
