Making Clare’s Law Easier for Families

Making Clare’s Law Easier for Families

We want to make a change to Clare’s Law to make it easier for immediate family members to find out the information of their loved ones partner.
Clare’s Law passed in England and Wales in 2014. It was then rolled out in Scotland in 2016, and Northern Ireland in 2018. Since then, a version of Clare’s Law has also been trialled in New South Wales, Australia, and the province of Saskatchewan in Canada. However, filling the sheet out isn’t the easiest and if you are a next of kin requesting the information, this will inform the ‘victim’ that it is being asked by said person.
In a lot of narcissistic relationships, many ‘victims’ do not realise they are being controlled and very much in ‘love’ and see no wrong. Many will refuse the information as they will not see what others around them can see. Not giving their next of kins the information they need to help their loved ones.
This is what we need to change. We need an easier process to get the information to next of kins. Even if this involves providing official ID to prove who you are to clarify next of kin so people are not using this to snoop on anyone.
We know this too well as I am the mother of Terri Harris. My daughter was murdered with her two children and one of their friends by her then partner in 2021. I tried to fill in the sheet for Clare’s Law and found it very difficult and when I saw that my daughter was going to be informed, I knew I wouldn’t get the information I needed to help her understand. I believe this information, if given, would have helped towards moving her away from that situation. By making it more accessible I could have made a difference. Thank you for reading.
