Making Church Walk and Granard alleyways safe from moped speeders

The Issue

Pedestrians, especially young children,  are at risk from being hit by aggressive moped riders and cyclists cutting through Church Walk and Granard alleyway at speed.  Many wear balaclavas to hide faces. There have been numerous incidents of people attending hospital after being hit. The problem is getting worse with more riders.

The risk is at some point a young child from the Beehive nursery, a learning difficulty child from Paddock primary school or a less agile elderly person is seriously injured, with the risk of head injury if knocked over. A fatality could occur.

It is critical that a solution is enacted swiftly to prevent the risk of injury. This will involve proper metal swing gates with hydraulic return arms at either end of both throughways.

The prevention of injury overrides any discussion about mobility scooter access - which should still be possible with swing gates. Mopeds however would have to dismount to open both gates and will not be able to enter or exit  the throughways at high speed as now. Wandsworth council has a legal primary care of safety above all else
