Make winter guard an Olympic sport
The Issue
For about 3 years, I have been passionate about color guard, a beautiful performance art that combines dance, music, and the use of flags, rifles, and sabers. It has brought immense joy and a sense of belonging to my life and the lives of countless others. Yet, despite its growing popularity and the dedication of its performers, winter guard remains largely confined to schools and specific organizations like Drum Corps International (DCI) and Winter Guard International (WGI).
Winter guard is an incredible display of teamwork, athleticism, discipline, and creativity. The challenging training and beautiful choreography similar to that of any Olympic sport. In fact, these performers push their physical limits, displaying similar, if not the same level of discipline and dedication required by Olympic athletes. Recognizing winter guard as an Olympic sport would provide these athletic artists with the international platform they deserve and expand performance opportunities beyond the existing arenas.
Consider the inspirational story of a high school winter guard team that spent countless hours perfecting their routine for a chance to compete on a national stage. Through teamwork and perseverance, they crafted a show that left audiences in shock, earning them standing ovations. This is just one of many stories that illustrate the passion and commitment within the winter guard community.
The Olympics celebrate not just competition but also cultural expression. With the addition of winter guard to the Olympic roster, we would be honoring diverse forms of artistic expression and expanding the cultural tapestry of the Games.
To implement this, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) could recognize winter guard by initiating a formal proposal process. They could collaborate with WGI to set standardized rules and guidelines that ensure fair and consistent judging across international competitions. Inviting representatives from both amateur and professional levels to provide input would help ensure that the sport is integrated smoothly and inclusively.
Bringing winter guard to the Olympics would showcase this extraordinary art form on a global scale, inspiring young athletes and artists worldwide. Let us celebrate the talents and discipline of these performers. Please sign this petition to help make winter guard a respected Olympic sport, and display your support to recognize the dedication and skill of these passionate individuals. Together, we can make this vision a future.
