Make Wikipedia use someone's preferred pronouns
Make Wikipedia use someone's preferred pronouns
The Issue
Currently, it is Wikipedia's policy to misgender anyone who uses pronouns other than He/Him/His, She/Her/Hers, and They/Them/Theirs. In fact, the policy as of May 23rd 2026 does not require the person's preferred pronouns to be listed anywhere, instead just encouraging it. This means that someone who only uses, for example, Thon/Thon/Thons, a set of gender neutral pronouns that was listed in the Merriam-Webster dictionary back in 1934, would only be referred to as They/Them/Theirs. While their policy forbids misgendering, it also forces people to misgender countless others. To treat any set of pronouns as more or less legitimate is nothing if not cruel and discriminatory. Language changes as time goes on, and the moment meaning is consistently recognizable, a term becomes a new word. Language is a medium with which we communicate meaning. When we are able to do so, we are using language correctly.
