The Issue

I have faced great challenges throughout my life due to osteoarthritis and sciatica, conditions that stem from a congenital issue where my left hip was not properly formed at birth. Unfortunately, it wasn't until I was nine months old that this missing hip bone was discovered. Over the years, I've undergone more than 20 surgeries, including plastic surgery, in attempts to improve my quality of life. However, as I age, my mobility issues have only worsened, making it incredibly difficult to care for my 8-year-old daughter.

For individuals like myself, who are battling severe weight-related health issues, access to weight loss medications, including injections, could be life-changing. While certain health boards offer these treatments under the NHS, the criteria to qualify are extremely stringent. Currently, one must have a specific BMI and suffer from four additional weight-related symptoms. This high threshold makes it nearly impossible for many in need to access treatment through boards like Glasgow and Clyde.

Weight loss injections could be a pivotal factor in alleviating my health conditions and enabling me to undergo a crucial, life-changing operation. Their availability on the NHS should not be restricted to only those who meet such high criteria. This exclusion is simply unfair for individuals who do not meet these conditions but still suffer profoundly.

I urge health policy makers to reconsider the current criteria, making weight loss treatments more accessible to those with weight-related health concerns who are not currently eligible. This change could drastically improve lives and assist individuals like myself in managing serious health issues more effectively. Please sign this petition to make weight loss treatments more inclusive on the NHS for the benefit of countless people who need this support to lead healthier lives.
