Make Walking Dogs in High Temperatures Illegal in the UK
The Issue
I’m a lover of animals, and especially of dogs. In the summer when the weather starts warming up, I am always shocked to see people walking their dogs, in the middle of the day in the scorching heat! I think it’s really unfair, cruel and dangerous. Imagine wearing a fur coat in this weather!
Every year, countless dogs suffer from dehydration, heatstroke, and even death because their owners are not aware or simply ignore the risks associated with high temperatures. Understandably, some dog owners may be unable to walk their dogs in the early morning or later evening when temperatures are often cooler. However, a dog has never died from not going for a walk, but they have definitely died from going for a walk in temperatures that are too much for them.
Dogs don't have the same heat regulation capabilities as humans. According to the RSPCA, a dog's normal body temperature is between 38.3°C and 39.2°C (101°F - 102.5°F). When it's hot outside, their bodies can't cool down effectively, leading to serious health risks. This is especially true for breeds with short snouts, older dogs, and those with existing health conditions.
The asphalt temperature can be over 60°C (140°F) when the air temperature is just 25°C (77°F). Walking on such hot surfaces can not only burn their paws but also raise their body temperature dangerously high.
We need a law that prevents dog walking under unsafe temperature conditions. I urge legislators to introduce a temperature cap for dog walking, similar to the heat advisories we have for human sports. Public awareness campaigns should be launched to educate dog owners about the dangers of heat, emphasizing the use of cooling vests, shaded areas, and walking dogs in the early mornings or late evenings.
Sign this petition to urge our government to protect our furry friends from the dangers of heat exposure. Let's ensure every dog is safely and happily walked in conditions that suit them.
