Make Vivitrol a viable resource for homeless in Seattle

Make Vivitrol a viable resource for homeless in Seattle
The Issue
There is an undeniable link between drug addiction and homelessness, and both afflict all major cities across the United States. Seattle, in particular, is burdened with this: in a recent press conference, Seattle Mayor Ed Murray called the regional heroin epidemic one of the major causes and consequences of homelessness. I think it is time for us to do something about it and provide detoxification treatments, namely the highly effective, once-monthly Vivitrol, directly to the homeless.
I personally understand the correlation between homelessness and addiction. As an addict, I watched my whole family struggle to help me overcome my problems with drugs. Ultimately, I was left on my own to detox, which was nearly impossible without a support network. So why, as a society, are we leaving one of our most vulnerable populations to turn their lives around on their own?
In researching this issue, I discovered Vivitrol, a medication that blocks the “feel-good” receptors targeted by opioids, so that drugs like heroin no longer produce the euphoric feeling addicts crave. Vivitrol is highly effective when used after withdrawal, and significantly reduces the chance of relapse.
Although Vivitrol has been available since 2010, it is often not accessible for standard 12-step programs and low-cost rehab facilities. The reason? Its price tag: each monthly injection can cost up to $1,700. This amazing tool is far from attainable when you have nothing and are living on the streets.
I am petitioning the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to provide funding for Vivitrol treatments for the homeless in Seattle.
The foundation funds massive healthcare campaigns for marginalized people around the world, but thousands are in need right in its front yard. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is headquartered in Seattle, and, if it sets its sights on alleviating this devastating epidemic here at home, it could set the precedent for treatment programs around the country and help get so many people back on track.
Please sign my petition urging the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to turn its attention to the massive health crisis here at home, and fund Vivitrol treatments for the homeless in Seattle.
