The Issue

Growing up as a student at Hernando High, I've found myself battling hunger pangs during my first few classes. The vending machines, which could easily offer a quick snack or energy boost, remain unavailable during the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd periods, leaving students like me at a disadvantage when it comes to concentration and performance.

Studies have shown that hunger can significantly impact a student's ability to concentrate and retain information, ultimately affecting academic performance. A research article by the American School Health Association indicates that students who eat snacks have a higher level of alertness and participation in class.

Making the vending machines accessible during these crucial early hours can play a vital role in supporting student health and academic success. Schools across the country have adopted similar policies with positive outcomes, as students have reported increased satisfaction and improved readiness to learn throughout the day.

Moreover, this change wouldn't require significant resources or adjustments. The vending machines are already stocked and operational for the other periods; extending their availability is a minor change that can lead to major benefits for the student body.

I urge the school administration and the district office to consider the tangible benefits this change can bring to our students' lives. We want Hernando High to be a place where every student has the opportunity to perform their best without the distraction of hunger.

Please sign this petition to advocate for the well-being and academic success of Hernando High's students by making vending machines accessible during all periods, including 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
