Make Touch-A-Truck Sensory Friendly

Make Touch-A-Truck Sensory Friendly
The Issue
Today, I took my truck obsessed 2 year old to the Kentucky Science Center and My Big Little Adventure’s Touch A Truck event. The concept is amazing, with vehicles from various city departments and companies parked and available for children to climb into and learn all about straight from the people who drive them.
However, in practice, the dozens of big truck horns and sirens combined echoing under the viaduct is deafening. Many kids can over look this and have an awesome time. However, my child and many others I noticed were very upset by the loud noises and unable to enjoy the experience. Even with noise canceling headphones, the horns were too much for my son to handle and we had to leave shortly after arriving. I was devastated that my son was not able to enjoy the event that he was so excited to attend.
I propose that the event organizers plan an hour where the horns are not allowed to be honked. Signs can be placed in each truck, and ticket buyers can be made aware in advance of the “quiet hour” so to speak. I know kids will be kids, and there will still be the occasional horn but this will significantly cut down on the noise.
I brought this idea to the attention of a few volunteers and they seemed receptive, however, a petition may help make this happen. I believe every child, regardless of sensory needs should be able to enjoy this event. Please sign if you feel the same!
