Last week, an eye-opening civil suit hit Cornell University highlighting a grave concern in our community. Specifically, Cornell's Xi Chapter of Phi Chi Fraternity protected students involved in a horrific incident where an underage girl was reportedly sexually assaulted over the course of seven hours. This shocking revelation shakes the very foundations of trust and safety on campus.

Such incidents should not be tolerated, let alone shielded by educational institutions that ought to nurture a safe environment for students. University fraternity houses are becoming a plague on American college campuses and it’s time to do something about it. 

This petition was drafted since the NIC has made no movement towards shutting this chapter down, and Cornell hasn’t made the barring permanent. The temporary suspension of the Xi Chapter is simply not enough. To truly uphold justice and ensure the safety of all students, it is imperative to transform this temporary ban into a permanent shutdown. This decisive action is the bare minimum step for safeguarding Cornell students from any form of sexual violence, something Cornell has a horrific reputation for.

While fraternities can indeed enrich college life, this particular chapter has proven to be a grave exception. The allegations hint at a systematic issue within the fraternity's culture, one that needs to be dismantled permanently to prevent further atrocities.

Cornell University has a responsibility to act with integrity and accountability. By permanently dismantling the Xi Chapter, the institution will be taking a stand against predatory behavior and demonstrating a zero-tolerance policy for such misconduct. This must be Cornell's priority to protect its students and uphold its principles.

We call upon Cornell University's administration, the Board of Trustees, and all its stakeholders to take immediate and decisive action. This is not just about penalizing a few individuals; it’s about overhauling a system that has, unfortunately, perpetuated harmful behavior.
