The Issue

Vinyl records have outlived eight-tracks, MiniDiscs, MP3 players, and a few social media platforms too. Once considered obsolete, vinyl has become one of the biggest music comeback stories in the world — yet there is still no vinyl record emoji.

In the UK, vinyl sales are now at a 19-year high, with independent record shops continuing to grow and younger generations rediscovering the appeal of owning music physically. Nearly 500 independent record shops now operate across the UK, while stores host thousands of live events each year, bringing music communities together and helping high streets thrive again.

Vinyl has become such an important part of modern music culture that there is now an Official Vinyl Albums Chart and an Official Record Store Chart dedicated entirely to weekly record sales. Yet despite that cultural impact, there is still no vinyl record emoji. We have emojis for CDs, floppy disks, and even fax machines, but not for one of the most iconic symbols in music culture.

A vinyl emoji wouldn’t just represent a format: it would represent collecting, DJing, crate-digging, independent record shops, and the simple joy of putting a record on. This petition is a fun, simple way to show support for finally giving vinyl a place on the global keyboard!
