Make the Petworth to Chichester A285 Safer

The Issue

The A285 is officially the UK's most dangerous road. The 12-mile section of road between Chichester and Petworth has the most consistently high levels of serious and fatal accidents in Britain.

Recently, a local family's lives were shattered by tragedy after a head-on collision. Four people were killed.

Children lost their beloved mother, a husband lost his wife.

The neglect of safety on this road cannot continue. West Sussex Highways must act to ensure a tragedy of this magnitude never happens again.

We demand that immediate measures are taken to make the A285 safer.

 These include:

  • 50 mph speed limits on bends that have been proven - year after year - to be highly dangerous.
  • Average speed check cameras and fines for drivers who speed.
  • Average speed check cameras, commonly seen on motorways, are the ONLY solution to cutting speeding consistently over a stretch of many miles.
  • Placed between Petworth and Duncton, and again between Duncton and Halnaker, these would ensure compliance with the law.
