Make the Pacific Highway intersections safe
The issue
PETITION FOR SAFETY UPGRADES & REDESIGN OF THE INTERSECTIONS OF THE PACIFIC HIGHWAY (M1/A1) & THE BUCKETTS WAY AT TWELVE MILE CREEK AND
THE PACIFIC HIGHWAY (M1/A1) & MEDOWIE RD
To:
The Australian Federal Government
The New South Wales State Government
MidCoast Council
Port Stephens Council
Relevant Roads & Transport Authorities
We, the undersigned residents, business owners, road users, and community members, respectfully
call on Federal, State, and Local Government authorities to urgently investigate and commit to a
safer long-term redesign of the intersections connecting the Pacific Highway (M1/A1) and The
Bucketts Way at Twelve Mile Creek and the Pacific Highway (M1/A1) & Medowie Rd.
These intersections are a critical transport link for residents, tourists, freight operators, emergency
services, and visitors travelling between the Mid Coast region, Stroud district, Gloucester region, and
surrounding communities. However, increasing traffic volumes, heavy vehicle movements, merging
difficulties, and high-speed traffic conditions have created ongoing and serious safety concerns.
Community members have witnessed and experienced:
• Near misses and dangerous merging conditions
• Difficult turning movements for vehicles entering and exiting the highway
• Increased traffic congestion during holiday and peak travel periods
• Safety concerns for caravans, trucks, local traffic, and unfamiliar drivers
• Anxiety among local residents and regular road users regarding the risk of serious accidents or
fatalities
We believe the current road design no longer adequately meets the demands of present and future
traffic conditions.
Therefore, we respectfully request that all levels of government:
Conduct an urgent comprehensive safety review of these intersections
Investigate alternative intersection designs and traffic flow improvements
Consider upgrades including improved acceleration/deceleration lanes, overpasses, traffic signals, or
other modern safety solutions
Allocate funding for planning, consultation, and future construction works
Engage directly with local communities, emergency services, freight operators, and road users
during the planning process
The safety of our community and visitors must be prioritised before further serious incidents occur.
We ask our elected representatives and responsible authorities to work collaboratively toward a
practical, modern, and safer solution for these increasingly dangerous intersections.
