I have now been informed that Highways England works to remove the netting and replace it with a ‘More robust steel mesh’ were due to start last week. I can confirm they have started however as it’s bird nesting season, it is unclear what they will do if they come across nest sites already there. They have also confirmed that anti bird netting on bridges, that they have confirmed responsibility for, need to be inspected every two years and the netting or it’s condition should have been identified at least as a potential issue in April 2017 and their records do not indicate why this was not the case. As works have now begun and hopefully for the foreseeable future no more bird deaths will be caused by this particular netting, I am now directing my attention to the potential prosecution of Highways England (specifically Area 7 Structures Team) to prevent this from ever happening again. If no further checks are ever made of it again as their track record suggests, the same violations to animal welfare will ultimately reoccur. Therefore I will be contacting the wildlife police on the number 101 to report a wildlife crime. 1. To report neglect of netting that should have been maintained and checked every two years that they have admitted was NOT - subsequently causing the inhumane, painful and preventable death of dozens of birds which is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act 2008 2. Leaving multiple decaying birds feet away from pedestrians causing a serious health hazard, especially so close to a busy hospital. 3. Potentially causing the entanglement/death of protected bigger birds of prey, attracted by the dead pigeons 4. For choosing to start works now during nesting season (April - August) and disturbing/removing nests and eggs of birds which is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Thank you so much for all for your support and help which I’m positive has made them act faster than they would have. Please, if you can I encourage you to also report Highways England Area 7 structures team to the Nottinghamshire wildlife police on the 101 number. I have been informed the team responsible back in 2017 do not work there anymore however this is not an excuse, the department still exists, they must still be held accountable and they have the power to do this again if they are not faced with the consequences.
