Rosie Aindow started this petition to Nottingham City Council (Animal cruelty/dead animal problem) and

There is an ongoing animal welfare problem at Dunkirk Roundabout in Nottingham. Anti bird netting underneath the roundabout has been neglected and left by the council which has caused holes to form. Birds have become trapped when nesting there, become caught by the wire and slowly and painfully starved to death. To be trapped in such a way would induce severe stress and most likely broken wings and feet for days before they die. After a long and complicated process to get them to act, Highways England have finally accepted responsibility and removed the flimsy polyester netting and replaced it with a stronger steel mesh that should not cause problems. However my goal to seek justice for a number of environmental and safety violations has come to a dead end as they have ‘technically’ broken no laws. They are free to leave netting and check it when and as they like. If companies want to leave netting for 20+ years that’s acceptable no matter what gets trapped in it. Highways England was set to check this netting in 2017 and this did not happen. If checks were made and maintained, many birds would have been spared and the environmental damage would have been less. If not sufficiently maintained, anti bird netting poses the same risks as littering, abandoned fishing nets, animal snares or traps and fly tipping.
