The Issue

On the Newmarket High School property, there is a downhill dirt path that connects the Mulock Drive crosswalk with the school's parking lot. Hundreds of students use this path to get to school every day. All year around, this path becomes extremely unsafe as rain, snow, and ice cause students to slip and fall, risking serious injury. After many discussions between students and admin staff, a YRDSB representative was invited to the site to review the possibility of a staircase being built to ensure the safety of the path. The representative decided that this project could not move forward, primarily due to the path not being a "designated entrance" to the school.

The dirt path is being used by students as it is directly in front of the crosswalk. That route has always been used, as the park on the other side of Mulock Drive has a paved walkway. The crosswalk was installed in 2017 to ensure the safety of students after several accidents involving jaywalking. A proper safe staircase on the high school's property would be a logical extension that would complete the route that is being used.

The purpose of this petition is to gather community support and push the YRDSB to rethink their decision, in order to build a safe path now, instead of waiting until someone gets hurt to take action.
