Make the Mandatory Composting Law Voluntary

The Issue

Current policy mandates composting for every household and business, which results in unnecessary difficulty and economic burden for those who may not require or desire it. While composting is an excellent environmentally-friendly practice, forcing it upon everyone can be impractical. A study by the EPA states that 30% of what we throw away could be composted instead, but it does not necessarily mean 100% of us should be compelled to compost. It is vital for policies to strive for sustainability while also respecting individual circumstances and facilitating ease of compliance. Hence, we propose to change the mandatory composting law to make it voluntary and thereby foster a more inclusive and practical environmental policy.
