The Issue

I have always loved attending my school. The community is vibrant, and the education provided is exceptional. However, after being diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), which has temporarily taken away my ability to walk, I've faced an unexpected challenge that I never anticipated — accessing the school that I love so dearly. The fear of having to leave because of inadequate accessibility is daunting.

Students like me, who are differently-abled, should not have to choose a different school solely because their convenient and cherished learning environment does not cater to their accessibility needs. It's not just about my personal struggle but ensuring future students in a similar situation are not left behind or forced to compromise on the quality of their education due to accessibility barriers.

Accessibility in all forms should be a given right for everyone. From ramps and elevators to adaptive learning technologies and accessible restrooms, there are numerous solutions that are feasible for our school to implement so that no student feels excluded or struggles to access quality education.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 16.8 million people in the United Kingdom live with a disability, and a significant number are children who deserve an inclusive learning environment. Making our educational institutions more accessible reflects the values of equality and inclusivity that our community stands for.

I urge the school administration and the school board to evaluate the current infrastructure and take actionable steps to make our school more accessible. We can look into government grants or community fundraising to help support these necessary modifications.

Please sign this petition to help ensure that our school becomes a place where everyone can learn without barriers. Let's work together to make sure no student is left behind because of accessibility challenges. Every signature counts towards making our learning environment equitable for all!
