The Issue

Navigating the complexities of life with a potential cognitive disorder is challenging enough without the added stress of financial burdens. I know this firsthand. While balancing the demands of full-time education, working multiple voluntary roles, and raising a child alone, I have been continuously sanctioned by the Job Centre even after disclosing my struggles and informing them that I am awaiting an ADHD assessment.

This is a setback not just for me, but for many jobseekers who suspect they have spectrum disorders but face delays and outright impossibilities in getting assessed due to the cost and lack of support. The current system is not only inhumane but also impractical, leaving individuals without verified diagnoses trapped in a cycle of financial penalties.

Statistics reveal that undiagnosed cognitive disorders can lead to higher unemployment rates and prolonged economic instability. According to a study by the National Autistic Society, nearly one in five adults with autism are in work, compared to the national employment rate of 84%. This stark contrast underscores the urgent need for supportive interventions.

The solution is clear and actionable: the Job Centre should provide grants for comprehensive spectrum disorder assessments for jobseekers displaying markers of disorders such as ADHD and autism. This will not only allow for proper diagnosis and understanding but also tailor support and employability strategies specific to their needs.

By implementing this change, we can foster a more inclusive and compassionate support system that provides sustainable goals for those in need, ensuring they do not fall through the cracks. Join me in urging the Job Centre to take immediate action and make these essential assessments accessible to all jobseekers.

Sign this petition today and advocate for a system that recognises and supports the unique challenges faced by individuals with spectrum disorders. Together, we can create a more equitable path to employment and independence.
