Make the "FGFS" model of education a reality in Australia
The issue
For those wondering who I am, hi, my name is Jake and I am a 16-year-old student. I have started this petition because I have created a model of education that I believe will outperform the current education system here in Australia on many levels.
I created this model because I have seen firsthand the problems with the current education system. I have been in the public education system for my entire school-age life and I have realised how broken our system is.
Private schools, on average, earn $22,802 per student; public schools, on the other hand, earn, on average, $16,174. This equates, on average, to private schools earning $6,628 more than public schools per student. The reason why I find this unacceptable is that education is the primary catalyst for social mobility; i.e the better your school, the better your life will be. If we truly claim to be a country that provides equal opportunites to all, we need to act on this ASAP.
Another problem with the public education system is how it is managed. The Department of Education has an absolute grip on the public education system with little ability for students, teachers or parents to have their say. This year, the NSW government cut $148 million from the public education system without the electorate being able to push back. Decisions are being made about the future of your children without you having any input. It is my view that the education system should always be managed in the best interest of the students participating in it.'
Here's how my model handles both of these problems.
- Education funding will be based on how much a school receives in private funding. The formula will be the Schooling Resource Standard, the amount deemed to be required to educate a student, minus the private funding (e.g if a school receives $2,000 in tuition per student and the SRS is $20,000, the school will receive $18,000 per student
- All Department of Education decisions would be able to be critically analysed by democratically-elected school boards chosen by students and their parents. These school boards would be totally accountable to you and together, they could overturn any bad decision
- An education charter will be adopted that ensures the rights of all students in Australia. This will ensure that decisions are made in the best interests of students.
This future is possible but not without your help. We need to show the government that we care about education and that we will not rest until we see an education system that provides for every student regardless of income or status.Access the report here!
