Make the DAC (Dow Active Complex) Accessible to All: Lower or Eliminate Membership Fees

Make the DAC (Dow Active Complex) Accessible to All: Lower or Eliminate Membership Fees
The Issue
I'm a lifelong resident of our city and have spent countless hours at the original community center. In fact, it wasn't just a facility for me; it was the heart of our community. Shared moments, laughter, and life occurred within its walls, including unforgettable experiences for my adult son with a disability as well as my family and friends. Yet, with the birth of the new community center known as DAC, these precious experiences seem to be slipping out of reach.
The DAC is becoming a luxury for a significant portion of our community, and we must challenge that. Current membership fees of DAC, staggering to many, present a financial barrier too great to overcome for those on fixed incomes or who hail from low-income families. It is alarming when access to a community facility is beyond the reach of 8.2% or more of the city's population.
A community center must serve its entire community, regardless of economic standing or personal circumstances. It should not divide us into the 'haves' and the 'have-nots.' We urgently need to have DAC’s membership fees lowered or eliminated, notwithstanding every individual who finds them unaffordable. The change will not only foster inclusivity but also help keep our community's youth engaged in positive activities, lessening the chances of them turning to mischief.
To those who can make this happen: Listen to our plea and the unspoken cries of those unable to afford DAC’s membership. Let's transform DAC into a truly inclusive community center that is affordable and welcoming to everyone in our community. Please, sign this petition and help us make this change.

During the May 1, 2021 General and Special Elections, City of Deer Park voters approved the continuation of the one-half of one percent Type B Economic Development Sales and Use Tax. This is a continuation of the Type B Economic Development Sales and Use Tax that was approved by the voters in 2015. The new proposition will allow the funds generated by this tax to be used for the additional Type B economic development purpose of land, buildings, equipment, facilities, and improvements (including the maintenance and operating costs thereof) found by the board of directors of the Deer Park Community Development Corporation to be required or suitable for use for the following: amateur sports, children’s sports, athletic, entertainment and public park purposes and events, including ball parks, parks and park facilities, and open space improvements (including (i) a community/recreation center complex with indoor pool, gymnasium, and indoor track and (ii) an outdoor pool and/or pool related facilities); related concession and automobile parking facilities; related roads, streets, and water and sewer facilities; and other related improvements that enhance any of the above.
