The Issue

Growing up in Arizona, I've always been captivated by the vibrant culture and rich history of our state. However, one thing has puzzled me for years: why is the Apache Trout both our state fish and our state food? While I appreciate the significance of the Apache Trout as part of our natural heritage, it seems redundant and less representative of Arizona’s culinary identity. After all, our state is renowned for its incredible contributions to Southwestern cuisine.

Did you know that the chimichanga, a beloved Mexican-American culinary staple, was actually invented right here in Arizona? This deep-fried burrito, whose origins are traced back to Tucson, has become a symbol of the innovative and flavorful cuisine of our region. Its creation is a testament to Arizona’s unique integration of cultural influences and culinary creativity.

Chimichangas delight both locals and visitors with their crispy perfection and flavorful fillings, capturing the spirit of Arizona far more than a fish ever could. They are a beloved treat enjoyed by countless Arizonans and are a staple at restaurants throughout the state. This delicious dish undeniably deserves to be celebrated as a state symbol.

Changing the state food to chimichanga is a chance to promote our vibrant food scene and support local businesses and chefs who have kept the chimichanga tradition alive. It also aligns with our state's tourism, inviting visitors to experience a taste of Arizona's unique twist on Southwestern cuisine.

I urge you to join me in petitioning the Arizona state legislature to recognize the chimichanga as the official state food. It’s time to honor a creation that genuinely reflects our state’s identity and serves as a culinary ambassador of our rich cultural diversity.

Sign this petition and help us give the chimichanga the recognition it truly deserves!
