The Issue

Growing up in Lewisville, many of us eagerly anticipated the transition to middle school. For me, the promise of gaining access to the App Store was part of what made this move exciting. The idea of downloading educational apps, creative tools, and even games to bond with friends filled many students, including myself, with anticipation. It would help us deal with the new ways of middle school by providing us fun games and educational games. Unfortunately, this excitement was quickly squashed when LISD decided to restrict access to the App Store for middle schoolers.

The decision to remove App Store access undermines the educational potential of technology. Educational tools available on the App Store, such as coding applications, language learning aids, and interactive science platforms, provide unique opportunities for students to learn beyond the classroom. Additionally, access to creativity and productivity apps fosters a connection with technology that is vital in today’s digital world.

A study by the Pew Research Center revealed that nearly 95% of educators reported that students' ability to use and navigate digital tools has improved significantly with access to appropriate technologies. Removing App Store access is a step backward in preparing our kids for a future where digital literacy is paramount.

Lewisville Independent School District should trust its middle schoolers to make appropriate choices with App Store access just like it does with high school students. Letting our young minds explore technology responsibly under appropriate supervision will only strengthen their ability to navigate digital landscapes—skills they will carry into high school, college, and future careers.

We propose setting up a framework where middle school parents in LISD can opt into allowing their children to access the App Store under specified guidelines that ensure educational and age-appropriate material is prioritized. This balanced approach satisfies concerns regarding inappropriate usage while catering to their educational needs.

Also, there could be a rule to make sure that kids don’t play during school hours. My suggestion for that rule is “Non-educational apps can’t be used during school hours, they can only be used after or before school”

Let us bring back the excitement of middle school and provide our children with the resources they need to thrive in a digital age. Sign this petition to urge the LISD school board to restore App Store access to our middle schoolers. Together, let's support their educational journey and prepare them for a bright future ahead.
