Make the Aliso Creek Trail safer for pedestrians and Cyclists by Painting Divided Lanes

Make the Aliso Creek Trail safer for pedestrians and Cyclists by Painting Divided Lanes
The Issue
The Aliso Creek trail is a fantastic resource for our community, but it gets really crowded in the afternoon when school gets out at both Aliso Niguel High School and Aliso Viejo Middle School. Every day, runners, walkers, students, and cyclists all share the same undivided space. This leads to near misses, traffic bottlenecks, and an increased risk of collisions between fast-moving bikes and pedestrians.
As a student at ANHS and a runner who is on this path daily, I see these traffic issues firsthand. We shouldn't have to constantly look over our shoulders or dodge out of the way to use our local trail. After school gets out in the afternoon, it is hard for everyone to navigate the trail. Bikes are constantly slowing down to avoid people, then speeding up until they hit another group. And I as a runner am doing the same.
The Solution:
We are asking the Aliso Viejo Parks and Recreation Department and the Mayor’s Office to paint a dividing line down the center of the path, creating one designated lane for cyclists and one designated lane for pedestrians. There is no downsides to this approach because it doesn’t enforce strict laws in order to control traffic and simply asks everyone to stay in their lane which will be beneficial for everyone.
The Impact:
This is a low-cost, high-impact solution. Simply painting lanes will:
- Give cyclists a clear, unobstructed path to ride at any speed.
- Allow runners, walkers, and students to safely use the trail without fear of being hit.
- Naturally organize traffic and improve the flow of the trail for everyone.
