Make Taunton police scanners unencrypted again.

The Issue

Recently Taunton Police Department changed their radio broadcasts to encrypted. This has completely isolated the citizens of Taunton. They no longer have access to public information they have always been accustomed to. There has been many times where the public has seen something on the Facebook scanner pages or heard something directly from the scanner and was able give vital information to assist the police department in locating dangerous subjects, vehicles, missing people etc. Without this transparency from the police department, the public can no longer provide the information they may have in a timely manner if even at all. This could result in dangerous people getting away to commit further crimes, or even an endangered/missing person not being found. Not to mention being able to stay away from areas such as a crime scene or accidents and being able to find an alternative route. Some of the main reasons given as to why some city police departments going encrypted have never been an issue in Taunton. Having a publicly accessible decrypted scanner channel will do much more good than harm, as it has for many decades. Sensitive information can be given over the phone as it has been for years, or even use the encrypted channel just to transmit that information. Scanner and police activity is public information, and by using the encrypted channel for anything other than just sensitive information is only isolating the community and making them lose trust in the police department.
