The Issue

In the lower-income community of Watsonville, CA, where I live, about 80% of the population cannot swim. However, there is a strong desire among families to swim and have their children learn this essential life skill. A recent survey from my study found that 86% of participants wanted their children to swim more. More strikingly, lower-income families were more likely to express that their children would like to swim more than they currently do. This desire is not surprising, given that swimming is not just a recreational activity but a vital life skill.

Across the nation, the reality is even starker. The CDC reports that 40 million adults in the United States are unable to swim. Meanwhile, the American Red Cross highlights that more than half of the US population cannot swim well. These statistics underscore a significant public safety and equal opportunity issue. Drowning is a leading cause of unintentional injury death worldwide, and providing universal access to swimming could dramatically reduce these tragic incidents.

We need to make swimming accessible to everyone, regardless of socio-economic background. To achieve this, we must advocate for swimming to be recognized as a fundamental right for all US citizens. This would involve integrating swimming lessons into educational curriculums, subsidizing or fully covering lesson costs for low-income families, and ensuring that every community has access to safe and equipped swimming facilities.

We appeal to policymakers, educators, and community leaders to prioritize this initiative. By taking these steps, we can not only promote safety and well-being but also foster a more equitable society where everyone, irrespective of their background, has the opportunity to enjoy and benefit from swimming.

Join me in this important cause. Let's urge our leaders to make swimming a right for all US citizens. Sign this petition to support a future where swimming is universally accessible. Full dissertation: https://www.proquest.com/docview/3212511808
