CALL FOR ACTION! End violence epidemic at Yarrabilba State School NOW!
The issue
My daughter attends Yarrabilba State School in Grade 1. She is 6 years old.
This all begins on Monday the 7th of November when I received an email from my daughter’s teacher explaining that my daughter had been assaulted twice by the same student in two separate unprovoked attacks that day at school. She had been scratched and she had been choked. It was a shock. But the shock didn’t stop there, I subsequently discovered that this was far from an isolated event, nor was it limited to just one class, one perpetrator or one victim.
The attacks on my daughter continued, some physical, some verbal, all the while other incidents are coming to light within the school community. Disturbing YES! I am now scared for my daughter’s safety at school, as are many many other parents and who wouldn’t be? BUT what came next was a series of poor responses from the principal including We try not to suspend anyone, it looks bad for the school and we can’t discuss any action that may or may not have been taken. So the perpetrator was allowed to continue his attacks on my daughter while my continued desperate attempts to get action were ignored and my little girl bravely kept speaking up for herself to the teacher. UNTIL they told her she was lying. The VICTIM of multiple unprovoked assaults is now lying.
Sadly and disturbingly this is just the tip of the tumour that insidiously grows within the boundaries of the school, harbouring a culture of victim blaming and shaming, perpetrator protection and a complete failure of the system that claims to be the foundation of our children’s educational future.
I have been told of other incidents involving choking, spitting, pushing and substantial injuries inflicted by violence including a stabbing incident earlier this year in school grounds, fractured ribs and a student having a rock thrown at his head causing seizures. Children are self-harming and at serious risk of future suicide attempts. One classroom is consistently evacuated due to the actions of a habitual offender who the school refuse to remove.
It has long been public knowledge that this school has a reputation for bullying and violence but when I invited other parents to share their experiences it started to show a very very disturbing trend. Lack of support for victims, shutting parents out and down-right negligence is resulting in parents feeling fed-up, frustrated and angry and children remain vulnerable and at risk of serious harm.
Our outrage was given support and publicity when it was published online by a journalist for the Courier Mail late last year which subsequently encouraged parents to start speaking of their childrens terror and suffering at the school.
Parents want an independent investigation into the handling of violence at Yarrabilba State School.
We want a hardline approach to serious assaults, including choking be implemented with the first response being immediate suspension and repeated serious offences resulting in expulsion.
School to implement a risk assessment process in cases of serious and ongoing offending to increase the safety of the students at all times.
ADEQUATE support to be provided for the victims of assaults and bullying for as long as it is needed.
Transparency between the school and parents of victims of bullying and violence at the school with regards to the handling of incidents involving their children and a complete overhaul of the current policies and procedures with the intention to change the toxic culture and attitudes towards protecting perpetrators and vilifying victims.
Preventative age-appropriate education programs for the students and teachers on bullying and harrassment, sexual assault and harrassment, and violence towards women.
Stop normalising and making excuses for habitual abusers and setting the standard that others must adjust themselves around it.
Queensland Government intervene before someone dies at this school.
