MAKE SUGAR EASIER TO SEE

The Issue

I am extremely concerned about the amount of sugar we consume as children. When we go to a store, we see attractive packaging that makes us want to buy it all. However, if there were labels indicating, for example, "6 teaspoons of sugar" or "six cubes of sugar," we could visualize and understand the content better to make safer and more responsible choices.

Through my research, I discovered that countries like Chile and the UK have effective food warning label systems that help both children and adults make more informed decisions regarding sugar intake. Inspired by these models, I am urging the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to implement similar clear and concise warning labels in India.

By introducing vivid, front-of-pack labels that specify sugar content and other critical nutritional information, we can combat unhealthy eating patterns among children and encourage healthier dietary habits. This is particularly important given the increasing rates of childhood obesity and related health issues in India. According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), the prevalence of overweight children in India increased from 2.1% in 2015-16 to 3.4% in 2019-20—a clear indication that effective intervention is urgently needed.

It's crucial that labels are not only scientifically accurate but also easily understandable by everyone, including children. For instance, using visual cues such as teaspoons or cubes of sugar could make a significant impact in translating abstract numbers into relatable terms, thereby empowering consumers.

My student action plan for the PYP Year 5 graduation project aims to initiate change by raising awareness and urging FSSAI to take decisive action. To make this happen, I need your support to collect at least 1000 signatures. Your signature on this petition will amplify our voice and help send a compelling message to FSSAI to prioritize this vital public health initiative.

Please sign this petition to make food labels clearer and contribute to promoting healthier lifestyle choices for children and adults across India. Together, we can make a difference for a healthier future.
