Make St Kilda the Launch Site for the State Government's Live Music Initiative

The issue

St Kilda, a vibrant suburb of Melbourne, is renowned for its rich music culture and history. It has been home to numerous iconic music venues and has played a significant role in shaping Australia's live music scene.

We propose that St Kilda should be chosen as the host site for the launch of a new State Government initiative 10,000 gigs aimed at promoting local live music and venues. This would not only acknowledge St Kilda’s contribution to Victoria’s cultural heritage but also provide an economic boost to local businesses and artists who have been severely impacted by recent events.

According to Music Victoria, the state’s peak body for contemporary music, Victoria’s live music industry contributes $1.7 billion annually to the state economy (source: The Age). The State Governement is soon to announce a release date for the 10,000 gig initiative, their commitment to support thousands of artists and venues across the state, investing $7.5 million to provide up to $1,000 to musicians to perform at live music venues.

This investment will support around 10,000 gigs over the next four years – giving more performers a stage and giving more Victorians the chance to see the live music they love, while packing pubs, clubs, and venues across the state.

By launching the initiative in St Kilda, we can ensure that our beloved suburb continues contributing significantly towards this figure while enhancing its reputation as a hub for cultural activities and, remain on the map as the capital of live music.

We need to make sure our next generation of musicians are supported, and that all music fans have great venues to see these artists play in. Otherwise, it could mean the end of this cultural draw card to Melbourne and take us off the map as the live music capital.

We urge you to support our cause and help us make history by making St Kilda synonymous with Victoria's previously thriving live music scene again. Please sign this petition today!
