Make Slaughter Method Labelling Mandatory on All UK Meat Products

Make Slaughter Method Labelling Mandatory on All UK Meat Products

The Issue

We call on the UK Government to make it a legal requirement that all meat and poultry products are clearly labelled with the method of slaughter — stating whether the animal was fully stunned, recoverably stunned, or non-stunned before death.

At present, millions of consumers are unknowingly purchasing meat that has been slaughtered under religious exemptions (Halal or Kosher), often involving non-stun or recoverable stun methods. These products are entering the general food supply without clear labelling, leaving shoppers unable to make informed, ethical, or faith-based choices.

This is a misleading omission under UK consumer law — key information that directly affects purchasing decisions is being withheld. UK food standards are already filled with strict red tape: every allergen, additive, and trace ingredient must be clearly labelled, yet the method of slaughter — one of the most significant ethical and religious concerns for many consumers — is hidden.

If a product may contain nuts, it must be labelled. But if it comes from a non-stunned animal, consumers are given no warning at all.
That is not transparency — it’s deception.

This petition is not against any faith or practice. It is about honesty, accountability, and respect for personal choice. Everyone, regardless of belief, has a right to know:

How the animal was slaughtered (stunned, recoverably stunned, or non-stunned)

Whether it was carried out under religious exemption (Halal, Kosher, etc.)

Which animal welfare standards the abattoir followed. Many people assume UK meat comes from fully stunned animals under national welfare standards — but this is not the case. Without full disclosure, consumers are being misled into eating meat that contradicts their values or religion.

We are demanding that the Government:

Ban unlabelled Halal and Kosher meat from entering the general food chain

End the misleading omission of slaughter information

Require mandatory, front-of-pack labelling of slaughter methods

The UK prides itself on high food standards and consumer protection. It’s time to make those standards consistent, honest, and transparent.
We have a right to know how our meat is slaughtered — and it’s time the law reflected that.

ALL HALAL MEAT SHOULD BE CLEARLY LABELLED
