Make Singapore Sports School Safer!
Make Singapore Sports School Safer!
The Issue
The recent scandal involving male students at the Singapore Sports School creating and disseminating deepfake images of their female counterparts gravely undermines student safety and the educational environment. The penalties, including 'caning for some students and sports trip bans, suspension from school, training and boarding', are a superficial response to an incident that reeks of gross disrespect, violation of privacy, and cybercrime.
We must remember that the students nurtured within this school are future national athletes - pillars of sportsmanship and role models for the youth. As such, maintaining a high standard for behaviour is imperative. The current penalties do not adequately reflect the seriousness of the violation committed.
Moreover, it is unacceptable that the female students, in this case, are expected to continue their studies and training alongside the very people who violated their privacy so blatantly. This breeds an unsafe environment for them and does not hold the perpetrators sufficiently accountable for their actions. The mental load and PTSD is an unnecessary burden on top of everything else that female athletes encounter to turn pro and elite.
This petition calls for the expulsion of the students who were involved in creating and distributing these deepfake images. We implore the school administration, Mr Edwin Tong, Minister of Culture, Community and Youth, Ministry of Education and other relevant authorities to not just punish but also put in place preventive measures, involving comprehensive education about digital citizenship and respect.
Let's make the Singapore Sports School the embodiment of respect, fairness, and safety it promises to be. Please support us in demanding justice and protecting student safety - sign this petition.
