Make sign language a part of the Northern Ireland school curriculum

Make sign language a part of the Northern Ireland school curriculum
The Issue
My daughter is deaf, and every day, I witness the struggle she and many others face due to the lack of British Sign Language (BSL) and Irish Sign Language (ISL) instruction in Northern Ireland's schools. It is heart-wrenching to see her excluded from conversations and activities that other children participate in effortlessly. Why can’t sign language be embraced as a fundamental part of our educational system, on par with other subjects? After all, BSL and ISL are both officially recognized languages in Northern Ireland.
Education should be a gateway to inclusion, extending beyond just spoken and written words. Making BSL and ISL a staple in school curriculums would ensure that all students, regardless of hearing ability, have the chance to communicate effectively with their peers. This inclusion would foster empathy, understanding, and community cohesion—pillars of a progressive society.
Educational statistics highlight the benefits of bilingualism and language learning in enhancing cognitive skills, promoting cultural understanding, and increasing employability. These benefits underscore the urgency and imperative of incorporating sign language education into our schools. Moreover, the cost of implementing sign language programs is minimal compared to the far-reaching advantages of raising a generation equipped to communicate inclusively.
Some regions have already made strides in adopting sign language into their curricula. They report increased engagement in the classroom, broader social participation, and reduced incidence of bullying against deaf students. By following suit, Northern Ireland can demonstrate leadership in educational inclusivity.
Let's invest in a future where every child, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing, can thrive. Mandating BSL and ISL instruction in schools is a proactive step towards creating a compassionate, inclusive society, where everyone has the opportunity to connect and contribute meaningfully.
Please sign this petition to urge the Northern Ireland education authorities to make sign language a permanent fixture in the school curriculum, ensuring it is accessible to all students across the region. Together, we can bridge the communication gap and pave the way for a more inclusive future.
