The Issue

My name is Samantha, and I have been battling recurrent shingles outbreaks since I was just 16 years old. These outbreaks manifest painfully on my face, dangerously close to my eye, risking my vision. Yet, I'm told time and again by doctors that there's nothing much to do about it because the shingles vaccine is reserved for older adults, leaving individuals like me to just 'ride it out.' This is a reality I’ve faced annually, enduring excruciating pain every single year.

Shingles is a virus caused by the reactivation of the chickenpox virus, and while it is more prevalent in the elderly, it can severely affect people of all ages. For many young people, shingles isn't just an occasional nuisance; it's a relentless health threat. With approximately 1 in 3 people in the U.S. developing shingles in their lifetime (according to the CDC), there is a significant portion of younger individuals at risk who should have access to the vaccine.

The current age restriction on the shingles vaccination overlooks those younger than 50, leaving anyone suffering outside of this demographic vulnerable. This policy does not account for recurrent cases among younger individuals, like me, who suffer immensely and are left without preventive options.

By making the shingles vaccine accessible to younger generations, especially those with a history of recurrent episodes, we can alleviate much of their unnecessary suffering. We call on health authorities, particularly the CDC, to reconsider and update vaccine guidelines to protect the younger population.

A more inclusive policy would not only improve the quality of life for thousands but could potentially save some from severe complications, such as loss of vision. This change is a proactive and necessary step towards equitable healthcare provision. Please, join me in urging the CDC and public health agencies to revise their shingles vaccine guidelines and extend access to those who critically need it, regardless of age. Sign this petition and help bring about a crucial change for better wellness and protection against this debilitating condition.
