Make Sewer Costs a Community Responsibility in Vassalboro, ME

The Issue

I am one of the 200 residents in Vassalboro, ME who are unfairly burdened with the cost of a $3 million sewer project. This financial strain has already led to liens on homes for 10% of us as of October 2023, and an additional 13 to 15 were issued later that same month. The rates are set to increase by another staggering 60% in January 2024, with more increases expected thereafter.

This situation is not only unsustainable but also unjust. It is unrealistic to expect such a small group of people to shoulder the entire cost of a project that benefits the whole town. We believe it's time for this issue to be addressed at a town level and for costs to be distributed more equitably among all residents.

The current approach threatens our homes and livelihoods while creating divisions within our community. A change in policy would not only alleviate this undue financial pressure on us but also foster unity and shared responsibility among all residents.

We urge you - our fellow citizens, local leaders, and decision-makers - to reconsider how these costs are allocated. Let's make sewer costs a community responsibility rather than an unfair burden on just some of us.
