Make Seattle Streets Safer by Ending Distracted Driving
Make Seattle Streets Safer by Ending Distracted Driving
The Issue
Every day, lives are lost to drivers texting or using their phones behind the wheel in Seattle. Distracted driving is preventable and should not be treated lightly.
Current fines are too low and enforcement is too weak. We need harsher penalties and stronger enforcement to protect everyone on the road.
Despite the passage of stronger distracted driving laws in 2017, the rate of distracted driving is a growing threat on Washington roads. Notably, deaths from distracted driving jumped 36% from 2022, reversing a downward trend that began in 2018 after the state passed its eDUI law.
This sharp increase shows that current penalties and enforcement are not enough to stop risky phone use behind the wheel. Stronger fines and stricter enforcement are needed to protect drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.
Washington’s new law bans holding a phone or other electronic device while driving, requiring hands-free use only, with fines for violations and the ability for police to pull over offenders. While this is a step forward in addressing distracted driving, the penalties are relatively low, and repeat offenses are not strongly discouraged.
Despite the law, many drivers continue risky behaviors, showing that current fines and enforcement alone are not enough to significantly reduce phone use behind the wheel. Stronger penalties and more consistent enforcement are needed to make our roads truly safer.
Sign this petition to urge Seattle city leaders to take action and make distracted driving a serious offense. Together, we can save lives and keep our streets safe.
