Make Schools Safer: Enforce Anti-Bullying and Nondiscrimination Protections Nationwide
The Issue
In a time when student safety and inclusion should be a given, too many schools still fall short. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, more than 20% of students ages 12–18 report being bullied in the United States. That’s not just a number — it represents real students dealing with fear, anxiety, and emotional harm every day.
Bullying isn’t harmless or something students can simply “tough out.” Research shows that students who experience bullying face much higher risks of depression, anxiety, disengaging from school, and suicidal thoughts. In the worst cases, ongoing bullying contributes to outcomes that could have been prevented with proper support, clear policies, and early intervention.
While many schools claim to have anti-bullying rules, enforcement is often inconsistent or unclear. Some schools lack proper training, accessible reporting systems, or clear consequences, leaving students unprotected. This inconsistency puts students’ mental health, safety, and academic success at risk.
We are calling for a federal requirement that all schools receiving federal education funding must implement and enforce clear anti-bullying and nondiscrimination protections for every student. This should include staff training, transparent reporting options, and fair disciplinary procedures designed to stop harm before it escalates.
Schools should be places where students can learn, grow, and feel safe — not places where fear or isolation are ignored. Preventing bullying isn’t optional; it’s a responsibility.
Sign this petition to urge federal education authorities to strengthen and enforce comprehensive anti-bullying and nondiscrimination policies in all federally funded schools. Together, we can help prevent avoidable harm and make schools safer for everyone.
