As a single-income family with three children enrolled in Rapides Parish schools, we've found the mandatory use of SchoolCash Online (RPSB’s Cashless Payment System) to be financially burdensome. Within two weeks of the system’s implementation, and during our first use, we found that one of our children’s accounts has $7.50 in service fees on top of the school fees. For instance, one club fee was supposed to be $110 but escalated to $114.50 due to these service fees. Another club sponsor was considerate enough to reduce the club fee, taking LESS for the club account to ensure families didn't pay more than the intended $65. It may seem trivial, but if this trend continues, we foresee paying over $100 in service fees alone next Fall for ONE CHILD (based on our children’s current class schedules and club memberships).

We believe families should have the option to decide how to manage school-related payments. Mandatory use of SchoolCash Online restricts this choice and disproportionately impacts families who, like ours, may be managing on one income. Many families within Rapides Parish face similar financial constraints, and the issue calls for immediate attention.

Research indicates that financially inclusive policies in educational institutions improve trust and cooperation between families and schools. Mandatory online payment systems can create undue financial pressure on families, especially during challenging economic times. It's important to remember that schools serve as community pillars, and decisions should foster accessibility and financial inclusivity.

We propose that the Rapides Parish School Board offer families the option to use alternative payment methods, such as cash or checks, without mandatory service fees. This change will alleviate financial stress and grant families the necessary flexibility to choose the payment options that best fit their circumstances.
