Make school start at 8:00
Make school start at 8:00
The Issue
I'm a student who just wants a bit more sleep. Waking up at the crack of dawn for school always leaves me tired and cranky, and I know I'm not alone. Countless students struggle with early school start times, and it's time for a change – for our health, our well-being, and our performance in school.
Mounting evidence supports the need for later school start times. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that middle and high schools start at 8:30 a.m. or later to align with adolescents' natural sleep cycles. Yet, many schools across the country begin much earlier, some even before 7:30 a.m., making it nearly impossible for students to get the recommended 8-10 hours of sleep per night.
Lack of sleep can have serious consequences on students' health, including increased risks of obesity, depression, and academic failure. Research indicates that later start times could significantly improve students' overall health, mood, and academic success.
Pioneering districts that have moved their start times later, such as in Seattle and Fairfax County, have seen improved attendance rates, better grades, and significantly reduced tardiness among students. By adopting an 8:00 a.m. start time, schools can create a more conducive learning environment where students are alert and ready to learn.
Together, we can push for this essential change that benefits students, teachers, and families alike. Let's speak up for healthier, more productive school schedules. Please join me in calling for school start times to begin no earlier than 8:00 a.m. Sign this petition to make a difference for students everywhere.
