Make school end earlier

Make school end earlier
The Issue
When I was homeschooled, I was able to complete everything needed for the average school day in just two hours. This begs the question: why should traditional schooling consume half of a child's day when the core educational objectives could potentially be achieved in so much less time? We are taking children away from their families for extended periods, and although the current structure might support parents with multiple jobs, it raises concerns about the impact on the well-being of children.
Extensive hours in school have been associated with social problems and anxiety among students. According to the American Psychological Association, prolonged exposure to a stressful school environment can lead to increased anxiety levels and affect overall mental health. Additionally, a report from the National Center for Education Statistics indicates that excessive homework and long school hours contribute to students' stress and family life imbalance.
Moreover, studies from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention highlight the importance of family time in fostering healthy emotional development in children. Reducing school hours can promote a better balance, allowing children more time to engage with their families, hobbies, and other interests that are vital for their development.
It's crucial to acknowledge that learning efficiency varies; hence, a one-size-fits-all approach to the school day is not ideal. Tailoring education to fit the productive schedules that work for the majority of students could prove beneficial. For instance, Finland, known for its high-performing educational system, employs shorter school days with remarkable results in student performance and well-being.
We can look towards implementing a more balanced structure, perhaps an opt-in system for parents who prefer a shorter traditional school day. This can be supplemented with community programs and activities for those who may require full-day care due to work obligations, striking a healthy balance between education and general well-being.
I urge educators, policymakers, and community leaders to consider restructuring our school days. Let’s aim to create a system that benefits both the educational and emotional needs of children, while considering the needs of working families. Please sign this petition to support changes in the school schedule that will help create a happier and healthier future for our children.
