Make school classes start no earlier than 9 am for students
The Issue
School shall start running buses no earlier than 8am and class start at 9am.
Middle schoolers and teens during puberty go to school (forcefully) and most of them don't understand the dangers to their sleep because of school, well Im going to explain to you about it. As a middle school student myself experiencing the challenges of our current school schedule, I'm writing to address a critical issue that has far-reaching implications on our health and well-being with my opinions. Currently, many schools start their day at a time that compromises students' health. Like many of my peers, I consistently find myself exhausted in the mornings. Despite maintaining regular bedtime routines, the looming stress of schoolwork exacerbates my insomnia, significantly affecting the quality of my sleep (from 95/100 on weekends to 65/100 during school days according to apple health using my watch). This isn’t just a personal inconvenience; it’s a widespread health risk impacting adolescents everywhere, especially those going through puberty.
Puberty is a crucial time when hormonal changes dictate growth and development. According to numerous health experts, the hormones responsible for height, muscle, and tissue development are predominantly released during deep sleep. Thus, adequate sleep is not just beneficial but necessary for healthy growth during this stage of life. However, our current school start times don't align with the biological sleep needs of teenagers, who naturally tend to fall asleep and wake up later than younger children and adults—a well-documented phenomenon known as "sleep phase delay."
Moreover, the chronic sleep deprivation that results from early school start times has been linked to a host of health issues, including an increased risk of obesity, depression, and weakened immune systems. It also affects cognitive function, leading to diminished academic performance, attention deficits, and increased classroom stress and accidents.
Various studies and policy recommendations, including those from the American Academy of Pediatrics, advocate for delaying school start times to 8:00 AM or later. These recommendations aren't just theoretical; they're based on empirical evidence showing that students exhibit better focus, improved academic performance, and enhanced mood and physical health when they are allowed more sleep. Some districts that have implemented later start times report significant improvements in student well-being and educational outcomes, illustrating a clear example of the positive impact this policy change can bring.
We urge educational authorities to review the scientific evidence and acknowledge the importance of aligning school schedules with the natural sleep patterns of students. Adjusting start times is a practical, evidence-based approach to supporting the physical and mental health of young people while maximizing their educational potential.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for a change that prioritizes student health, acknowledges biological needs, and enhances educational success. Let’s push for school schedules that nurture, rather than hinder, the well-being and development of our future generations. Together we can make a compelling case for healthier, more effective educational environments. Please sign this petition to support students’ health and academic success by ensuring no school start time is earlier than 8:00 AM.
Now I understand that Parents have work and there is some inconveniences, like early shifts for adults but children health should remain top priority instead of convenience. Adult jobs usually are 9-5 and by the way schools should be 8-3 to Support children health while keeping them educated and happy
