My good friend John "Poo" Jones and his mother were tragically murdered two weeks ago in Olney, Illinois. They were attacked by John's 25-year-old son, who suffers from schizophrenia. This horrific incident occurred because John could not afford the medication his son desperately needed. The son's untreated condition led him to snap, and this result was a devastating and preventable loss.

In memory of John and his mother, and to prevent further tragedies, it's crucial that we address the accessibility of mental health medications, particularly for those suffering from schizophrenia. In the United States, over 3.5 million people are affected by this disorder, with countless families struggling to provide necessary care due to financial constraints. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, about 1.1% of the population suffer from schizophrenia, which can severely impact a person's ability to think clearly, manage emotions, and make rational decisions.

Unfortunately, the cost of antipsychotic medications is often prohibitive, forcing many families to go without essential treatment. This is simply unacceptable. Had John been able to afford his son's medication, two precious lives might not have been lost. We must change the system so that families can afford the medicine that might prevent dangerous and deadly situations.

Let's urge pharmaceutical companies, healthcare providers, and lawmakers to work together to make schizophrenia medications more affordable and accessible. We need comprehensive health policies that ensure medications are covered by insurance and accessible to all, regardless of their income. Additionally, state-funded programs should be made available to assist those who fall through the insurance gap.
