Every single day, residents of the Shelter Cove community and other commuters on route 9 risk their safety just trying to pull in/out of their neighborhood.

We are officially calling on the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), the Town of Colonie, and the City of Cohoes to immediately intervene and do whatever is required to resolve the severe traffic hazards on U.S. Route 9 (Loudon Road) between Century Hill Dr and the Crescent Bridge on Mohawk River.

Currently, this stretch of highway is a high-speed 55 mph zone. Within this short corridor sit the two primary entry and exit points of Shelter Cove rapidly growing neighborhood: Bay Boulevard / Route 9 and Harbor Lane / Route 9. Neither intersection has a traffic light or any form of traffic control. There are other multiple locations/neighborhood facing the similar safety hazard on Route 9 which requires immediate attention.
As the residential density of townhomes and apartments in this stretch of highway continues to expand, the danger grows exponentially. 

We witness escalating safety hazards on a daily basis:

Blind & Dangerous Left Turns: Enter/exit from Shelter Cove onto Route 9 requires drivers to cross lanes of traffic moving at highway speeds with limited sight distance, leading to constant near-misses and a high risk of catastrophic T-bone collisions and head-on collisions while waiting on center lanes to make left turns.

Multiple Un-signaled Conflict Points: Having two completely uncontrolled, high-speed intersection entry points serving hundreds of dense residential units multiplies the daily risk for commuters.

Threats to Pedestrians & Cyclists: This corridor sits directly adjacent to the Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail and the Town of Colonie Mohawk River Park. Forcing a 55 mph speed zone through an active recreational area is a disaster waiting to happen.

A 55 mph designation is no longer appropriate or safe for this residential corridor. We need the responsible officials across all three departments—state and local—to coordinate immediately, deploy traffic counters, review police accident records, and execute the engineering studies required to reduce the speed limit and install functioning traffic control signals at Bay Boulevard, Harbor Lane and at other locations where required .
