Make Reservations Fair: Add Economic Criteria Alongside Caste

Make Reservations Fair: Add Economic Criteria Alongside Caste
The Issue
Who is impacted?
Today, millions of poor students across all castes—General, OBC, SC, and ST—struggle to access quality education and jobs. While some communities benefit from caste-based reservations, many equally poor general category students receive no support, despite facing financial hardship and limited resources. This creates deep frustration, especially among youth who feel excluded and unheard.
What is at stake?
If the current reservation system remains unchanged, inequality will increase—not decrease. Deserving, hardworking students will continue to be pushed aside simply because of their birth identity. Meanwhile, those from economically strong families who still qualify for reserved seats will benefit unfairly. This will lead to a loss of talent, growing resentment, and a more divided society.
Why is now the time to act?
India is changing. We are now a modern, diverse, and forward-thinking country. It is time our policies reflect today's reality. Reservation must be based on both social and economic disadvantage, not just caste. We ask the government to add economic criteria, conduct regular reviews, and ensure fairness for all. The youth of India are ready for unity and justice. Let’s build a future where opportunity is based on need—not just identity. The time to act is now.
Why This Matters:
The original intention behind caste-based reservations was to uplift those who were historically oppressed through the evils of untouchability and caste discrimination. This was absolutely necessary and justified when India became independent, as Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) faced centuries of social exclusion and denial of opportunity.
However, India has changed dramatically over the last 70+ years. Today, discrimination still exists—but economic hardship cuts across caste lines. Many general category families live in poverty, struggle for access to good education, and lack social support—yet receive no help under the current reservation system.
Key Concerns:
Caste ≠ Poverty:
Many from SC/ST/OBC communities are now economically well-off and still benefit from reservation, while poor general category students are left behind despite working hard.
Merit is Undermined:
In competitive exams like NEET, JEE, UPSC, or state services, reserved category cut-offs are often drastically lower than open category—leading to frustration and brain drain.
Perpetual Benefit:
Children of SC/ST officers, politicians, and rich families still benefit from reservation generation after generation, while poor students with no resources are denied a level playing field.
Youth Frustration:
A growing number of young Indians, regardless of caste, feel that the current system is unfair, outdated, and dividing society further.
DISCLAIMER : IT'S NOT AGAINST ANYONE JUST STANDING WITH EVERYONE
