Make Reporting Collisions With Cats a Legal Requirement for Drivers

The Issue

It began on the morning of the 5th of April, 2025. My heart sank as I found my young cat, Just a year old, lifelessly tucked under a hedge. Tears welled in my eyes as I noticed the signs – a bleeding nose, an injured head- clear evidence of a fatal car accident. No one had stopped. No one had reported it. With a sinking heart, I held her small body, my clothes stained with the undeniable truth. While i ran home screaming. The horror of her unreported demise demands for change.

It's a dreadful reality that incidents like these are not uncommon. An RSPCA research (2019) reveals that an estimated 230,000 cats are run over each year in the UK alone, with drivers not legally obligated to report the accidents. This grim statistic is not only devastating to cat owners, but it also undermines our shared commitment to showing compassion toward all living beings.

Our plea: to legally require drivers to stop and report collisions with cats. The law currently obliges motorists to report collisions with certain animals, such as dogs and horses, but fails to include our feline friends. With this change, hundreds of thousands of cats would get help sooner, or at the very least, owners like myself wouldn't be left in the heart-wrenching uncertainty. This change is not just about loving our pets; it's about respect, compassion, and a collective responsibility towards all creatures.

What happened to my kitten should not be any cat's fate. Join us as we demand the legal amendment necessary to safeguard our cats. Please, sign this petition to save countless feline lives and prevent other owners from experiencing the nightmare I've lived through. Sign for change.
