The Issue

Every year, on the 11th of November, Canadians take a moment to honour and remember the courageous men and women who have served and continue to serve our country in times of war, conflict, and peace. Remembrance Day is a solemn occasion marked by ceremonies throughout Canada, where veterans and citizens alike pay their respects to those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Yet, in the province of Ontario, Remembrance Day is not recognized as a statutory holiday.

Ontario is one of the few provinces in Canada where Remembrance Day does not hold the status of a statutory holiday. In regions such as British Columbia, Alberta, and Nova Scotia, citizens are given the day off work, allowing them to participate fully in commemorative activities and reflect on the sacrifices made by our armed forces. By making Remembrance Day a statutory holiday in Ontario, we would be aligning with national values of respect and remembrance, and providing Ontarians with the opportunity to pay tribute to our veterans.

Remembrance Day being a statutory holiday would mean that people from all walks of life, including workers and students, can attend ceremonies without needing to take time off from their usual responsibilities. This change would foster a deeper understanding of the historical significance of this day among the youth and the broader community, and ensure that all individuals have the chance to engage in remembrance activities.

Considering the vast number of veterans and their families living in Ontario, acknowledging Remembrance Day with this official status would be a step forward in honouring their service and sacrifices. It would also reinforce our commitment to ensuring that future generations understand and appreciate the freedoms they enjoy as a result of these sacrifices.

Let us take this important step in respecting our veterans and ensuring that their contributions are never forgotten. We urge the Ontario government to officially recognize Remembrance Day as a statutory holiday. By doing so, we strengthen our collective memory and community ties. Sign this petition to bring about this essential change for Ontario, for our veterans, and for the future.
