Make Rabies Pre-Exposure Vaccines Freely Accessible to All Veterinary Staff

Make Rabies Pre-Exposure Vaccines Freely Accessible to All Veterinary Staff
The Issue
Pre-Exposure Rabies Vaccines should be as readily available and affordable as flu vaccines. Sadly, pre-exposure rabies vaccines are scarce, expensive and very rarely covered by insurance.

I am involved in veterinary medicine and have been frustrated by the difficulty in accessing rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis vaccines. My journey has taken me through various agencies, doctor offices, and pharmacies. I have yet to receive a direct answer on why these vaccines are not readily accessible, let alone free. This journey has revealed a systemic problem affecting all staff within the practice of veterinary medicine.
It is crucial for our society to understand the importance of our role as veterinary professionals. We are often the first line of defense against diseases that can affect both animals and humans, such as rabies. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between 5,000 to 6,000 cases of animal rabies are reported each year in the United States. Veterinary staff, due to their close contact with animals, are particularly at risk.
Pre-exposure rabies vaccines are a fundamental protective measure for us. But the inaccessibility and cost create barriers for many veterinary staff to protect themselves adequately. When you imagine that there are approximately 109,000 licensed veterinarians in the United States and many more veterinary technicians, the scale of the issue becomes clear.
We advocate for the provision of pre-exposure rabies vaccines for all staff of veterinary practices, not only for their ease of accessibility but also make them free. It is a primary way to ensure the safety of these valuable practitioners and maintain our society's public health defense line.
Help us bring about this critical change for ourselves and our beloved community. Protect veterinary professionals - sign the petition now.
