What do we mean by public bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters?

This is a scheme where you will download an app, which tells you where the bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters are. Once you find one, the app allows you to unlock it. When you are finished, park it somewhere safe and legal and use the app to lock it; the back wheel will self-lock.

Why UL and Limerick city needs a Bike & Scooter Scheme

UL is expanding into Limerick city centre. Increasingly more students need to get into the city each day. The riverbank and canal bank paths runs the whole way from UL to the city centre, a beautiful 12-minute cycle; far quicker than the bus!

Students should be able to pick up a bike or scooter in UL and leave it in the city centre and complete the return journey in the same way.

It is time for Limerick city to start prioritising other forms of transport and reducing our reliance on private cars in the process.

Benefits to You

  • Avoid unnecessary traffic jams;
  • Eliminate time taken looking for parking and walking from car park to your building;
  • Save time; Milford to north campus: 20-minute walk or 5-minute cycle/scoot;
  • Experience the thrill of scooting and cycling;
  • Wake up your mind!
  • Reduce your personal and UL’s carbon footprint;
  • Meet ‘Healthy UL’ Framework guidelines and
  • Help to achieve Limerick Smarter Travel targets.

Why we need your support

The City and County Council has to put forward what its objectives are for one of these schemes, and make it an attractive option for potential bidders. New infrastructure such as designated parking areas around campus may be required. UL and the council are not going to act on this unless they are certain there is demand. This is what we MUST prove to them. Our aim is to be able to go to the decision-makers in UL and the council and say ‘THIS is what the students and people of Limerick want and here are X signatures to prove it.’ We want to be able to say to the council that ‘these are many potential voters, these are people who can secure your future as a Councillor for another five years, who want to see change’.

This is our opportunity to advance UL and Limerick city. As final year students, unfortunately, we will not get to experience a transport scheme like this at the university, but we hope that current and future generations of students in UL will. You will be improving the life of all students attending UL and the people of Limerick city, and all we need from you is to sign this petition.

Do not settle for the current transport options; let us bring our campus and city in-line with the leading university cities around the world.
