The Issue

Provident Street in Parr, St Helens is a busy road with access to two primary schools, making it a heavily-trafficked area, especially during school run hours. Parents, guardians, and the community at large have expressed increasing concern for the safety of our children who navigate this street daily.

Traffic congestion on Provident Street is dangerous during the hours when children are arriving and leaving school, leading to dangerous situations for pedestrians, particularly young children. Cars parked along both sides of the road further reduce visibility and increase the risk of accidents. Often the traffic is so bad that cars can’t even move! Turning Provident Street into a one-way street could significantly alleviate these problems.

Statistics show that converting roads to one-way systems can reduce traffic accidents by as much as 50% (source: Department for Transport). Implementing a one-way system could not only decrease traffic congestion on Provident Street but also improve the flow of traffic in surrounding areas, making it a safer environment for everyone.

Our neighbourhood deserves a practical solution that prioritises the safety of its youngest members. Converting Provident Street to a one-way street is a cost-effective solution that can be implemented with minimal disruption and to great effect.

We call on St Helens Council to take immediate action and conduct a feasibility study regarding this proposal. The safety of our children should be at the forefront of urban planning decisions, and this project will ensure a safer journey to and from school.
