The Issue

We are calling on the Livermore City Council to pass a resolution in support of California’s Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Bill (SB 684 / AB 1243).

What the Resolution Would Do? MAKES POLLUTERS PAY for the damage they have done

• Publicly support state legislation that makes the largest fossil fuel polluters pay for climate damages
• Show that Livermore stands with other Alameda County cities calling for accountability
• Strengthen the statewide push to pass SB 684 / AB 1243
• Help unlock funding for climate resilience, disaster recovery, public health, and clean energy

So far, more than 40 cities and counties across California have passed or are actively considering resolutions supporting this bill. Key cities include Alameda, El Cerrito, Emeryville, Hillsborough, Corte Madera, and Walnut Creek.

Critically, Alameda County is already a key county supporting this effort, alongside Contra Costa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Sonoma counties. Livermore is part of Alameda County — and our city should help lead, not lag.

By passing a resolution, Livermore would add its voice to a growing coalition of cities and counties demanding climate accountability.

Why This Matters for Livermore:

Climate disasters already strain city budgets and local services. Wildfire smoke worsens asthma, extreme heat threatens seniors and outdoor workers, and infrastructure repairs pull funding away from housing, transportation, and community programs.

A Climate Superfund would help shift these costs away from local taxpayers and onto the corporations that caused the harm. At least 40% of funds would be directed to disadvantaged communities, ensuring support reaches those hit first and hardest.

Our Demand:

We urge the Livermore City Council to pass a resolution endorsing the Polluters Pay Climate Superfund Bill (SB 684 / AB 1243) and to formally call on the California Legislature — including Senator Jerry McNerney — to vote yes.

By passing this resolution, Livermore can join dozens of California cities and counties already taking action and send a clear message: our community believes in fairness, accountability, and a livable future.
